BLACKS IS PHOTOGRAPHY

BLACKS PHOTOGRAPHY WILL CLOSE ALL LOCATIONS

It has been a little while since we’ve heard any news about store closures in Canada’s retail sector.

Best Buy abruptly shut down all Future Shop locations earlier this year in March and now it looks like another Canadian retailer has fallen victim to the digital age.

Blacks Photography is the latest retailer to close locations in Canada.

According to a report from the Globe and Mail, the photography equipment and supply store will be closing all 59 of their locations.

Blacks was purchased by Telus in 2009 and underwent a makeover last year but hasn’t been able to “realize profitable growth,” Luiza Staniec, a spokeswoman for Telus, said in an interview.

Blacks hosts the majority of their locations in Ontario but also has locations in Manitoba and Alberta.

The closures will leave 485 employees without jobs, however, Telus will try to find them positions at its other outlets: Telus and KoodoBlogTO reports that all stores will close by August, 8. 2015.

Blacks was founded in 1930 and started as a home appliance and electronics store.

The first Blacks’ specialty camera store opened in Toronto on St. Clair Avenue and the family owned business became a public company in 1969. In 1993, they were acquired by Fuji Film.

In 2007, they were acquired by Reichmann Hauer Capital Partners and later on, by Telus in 2009. At 85-years-old, it will be sad to see the longstanding Canadian retailer go.
