Three brothers and two brothers-in-law surprised the family,

friends and guests with a fantastic rendition of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" at their father's wedding reception.

I was only able to catch the last snippets on video so they agreed to sing it again. When we reached an empty room upstairs, two grandbabies were awake from their naps and wanting to be held.
Not only do these guys have amazing vocal talent, but they can also hold babies and sing at the same time!

I hope you had the chance to enjoy the high school students performing The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

Traditionally, the invention of the steel drum as a musical instrument is a discovery made in the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago.

The steel drum is in their minds, in their hearts, in their souls and an integral part of their culture.

I came to know this when I became involved in the Caribana Celebration for the first time in 1975.

In the years that followed, I was personally involved in many Caribana parades and festivities.

As a consequence of my involvement and contribution, the government of Trinidad and Tobago presented me with an award, The Trinidand and Tobago Republic Day Award, March 29, 2002 "In appreciation of (my) outstanding contribution and dedication to the development of the Arts, Culture and Education of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in Canada."

Ironally, March 29, 2002 was my 60th birthday, and it was one of the best presents and celebrations to receive on that day.

Up to that point, I never thought that any other nationality would play this instrument.  Nevertheless, when I saw the video with the youngsters playing the steel drum, I realized that I was wrong.

I watched the video closely many times and I realized that none of the kids had the Caribbean complexion (you know what I mean).

This performance tells me that the steel drums as a musical instrument has  acquired its passport and has the stamp of approval to travel around the world in the next few years.

Read my book, The Caribana Story, and discover this wonderful festival which was introduced to Canada in 1967 on the occasion its 100th Birthday by the nationals of Trinidad and Tobago.
